Gato Barbieri

Gato Barbieri was an Argentine tenor saxophonist born in Rosario in 1932 who built his reputation through the free jazz and avant-garde movements of the 1960s before moving toward Latin jazz in the 1970s. Critics compared his playing to John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, and his sound drew deeply from both his Argentine roots and the experimental currents of his era. He remained active into the 2000s and passed away in 2016.
