Dr. John, born Malcolm John Rebennack in New Orleans in 1941, was a pianist and singer who spent his career rooted in the sounds of his hometown, mixing New Orleans R&B, funk, and blues. He built the Dr. John persona around the imagery of voodoo and Mardi Gras culture, drawing on influences like Professor Longhair and Fats Domino. He worked across several decades as both a solo artist and an in-demand session musician, and was widely regarded as one of the great keepers of the New Orleans musical tradition.
